First Jewish Vocational School in the Darmstaedter Echo 19/09/1947
Last Monday the first Jewish vocational school was opened. The opening was possible thanks to the support of the President of the State Hesse, Professor Bergstraesser, and the Minister of Education of Hesse, Bechtolsheimer. 60 students between the age of 18 and 31 from DP Camps in the area surrounding Darmstadt are to receive vocational training. Their training period is for one year divided into three semesters. The daily training is consists of three parts where three hours are devoted to the theoretical and five hours to the practical study. The students will leave the school after examinations as approved electricians, carpenters and locksmiths. They live and eat in a nearby boarding facility. In addition to the classrooms there are workshops which were mostly constructed by the members of the school . A great amount of work, energy and stress had to be invested in order to prepare and equip the classrooms of the school facility within five months. Here, uprooted people have the opportunity to acquire a practical profession and thereby be to find a goal and purpose in life. |

| Die erste jüdische Berufsfachschule, die in Deutschland besteht, wurde am Freitag im Rahmen einer Feier im alten Bahnhofsgebäude am Steubenplatz in Darmstad durch den Leiter der Milit&aumöl;rregierung für den Stadt- und Landkreis Darmstadt, Oberst Rose erö;ffnet. Unter den Gästen befanden sich die Vertreter der amerkanischen Militärregierung, der hessischen Staatsregierung, des Regierungspräsidenten, der Stadtverwaltung und der jüdischen Gemeinde Darmstadt. Zur Erö;ffnung hatten General Clay und Direkor Newman ihre Glüchwünsche übermitteln lassen.
Die Schule, die unter Leitung von Samül Batalion steht, soll den jüdischen Schülern im Alter von 15-25 Jahren die Mö;glichkeit geben, sich auf ihr zukünftiges Leben in Palästina vorzubereiten und die übergangszeit bis dahin in Deutschland nutzbringend anzuwenden. Gegenwärtig laufen drei Kurse, Elekrotechnik – Dreher, Maschinenen – und Bauschlosser – Schreiner. Die Schüler sind in einem Internat untergebracht; ihre Zahl beträgt 30, soll jedoch im Laufe der nächsten Monate verdoppelt werden. Der Lehrplan umfasst die Gebiete technisches Rechnen, Messkunde, Installations-, Schwachstrom- und allgemeine Elekrotechnik, ferner Hebräisch und jüdische Geschichte. Täglich werden insgesamt zehn Unterrichtsstunden gegeben. Ein Teil der Lehrkräfte ist deutscher Staatsangehörrigkeit.
Im Anschluss an die Feier fand im Hotel „Post“, ein Emfang statt, bei dem massgebliche Vertreter der deutschen und amerikanischen Behörden sowie andere Instutitionen ihre Glückwünsche zur Erörffnung der Schule zum Ausdruck brachten. Unter anderen sprach auch der Leiter der jüdischen Jugendorganisation Bejtar in Amerika, Dr. Propes. |
